Re: REVIEW: OtR @ Canal Street 11/13/99

Well, I figure that since I appear to be the only lostie who snagged
a copy of the setlist, the least I can do is post it (not that it's a lot
different than anything we've seen since September, but what the hey?):

Set one (as written):
Go Down Ez
All I Need is E
Little Blue River
Moth
Goodbye
Anyway
Poughkeepsie
Orphan Girl
It's Never Quite
Faithfully Dangereaux

Set two:
The Seahorse
Etc Whatever
Bothered
June
Jack's Valentine
Circle of Quiet
Latter Days

Encore one:
Lucy
My Love is A Fever

Encore two (not played, le sigh):
Jack's Inst
Rhapsodie

Anyway...

Dan, my friends Finian and Misty (non-listie, first-time-OtR-Listeners),
and I got there quite a bit before the doors opened, but we had lovely fun
playing cards while sitting one the sidewalk outside the Tavern. I still
find it difficult to believe that we were playing cards outside in light
jackets at night in the middle of November, but there we were. Melissa,
amazing woman that she is, brought us peach and pear Jelly Bellies, and
then apologised for not baking!! (As if yummy jellybeans weren't enough!)
Thankfully, the nice door-people let us in just as it was starting to
become uncomfortable out there on the cement. We got seats right up by
the stage (yay!!) and played some more cards (sensing a theme here?).

Once I got used to Jack's lovably peculiar singing style, I really
enjoyed his music--and as I stated a bit earlier, I'm all for bringing
plenty of bright orange oars to the Dec. 11th show (it'll be better than
showering Bink with cereal boxes, if such a thing is possible!).

Speaking of Bink--are you going to tell the list how your gig went, dear?

Eventually, Jack went off and 'disguised himself', and the whole band came
to the stage. Our ladies were dressed quite nicely that evening--Ms. Terri
in a snappy outfit that started off as a 3-piece and turned into cute pants
and a neato pin-striped bodice-style top (hair down and prettily tousled);
Karin in a black tank-top with one of those little bolero jackets and a
velevty black skirt (mmm...velvet...) (hair red and in pigtails, for those
who are taking notes at home).

The show's highlights for me:

-The way my friend Misty was grinning during "Faithfully Dangerous". I
have this funny feeling that I'll be making another OtR mix-tape relatively
soon...

-A 'new' extended ending to "Circle of Quiet" (actually, it was the better
part of "Moon River". Really well-done.)

-Jack's ending to "June". Really, I don't think I'll ever get tired of
hearing that...so drowningly, intensely beautiful.

-The extended (and I do mean extended!) semi-impromptu jams that started
happening late in the show--especially the one at the end of "Lucy". I
think everybody in the Tavern, including most of the band members, was sure
that Karin counting "one, two, three" meant the end of the song--except
for Jeff Bird, who started a new tambourine rhythm and kept the jam going
for another three or four minutes!

-Getting to see Terri smile not once, but several times towards the end of
the show--and watching both the band and the audience smiling as the
music unfolded, and feeling that same smile widen across my face as well.

Dear Over the Rhine,
All I want for Christmas is to hear "Rhapsodie". Please...

Well, I think that's all from me...

Hugs to all,
Raven
