okay, so, i'm a bad person and have yet to buy/hear Ohio (still waiting
for my graduate stipend to catch up with my summer spendings), but a quick
google search on 'joni holly mary valerie' turns up this interview:

http://www.artspike.net/publish/public_html/print.php?sid=2226

relevent bit:

: Q) This one's for Karin: In Ohio, Joni, Holly, Mary and Valerie are
: mentioned. Should I know who they are? (Joni Mitchell? Holly Near?) Or
: are these personal references? Were these people from home? What is the
: Rubber Tree?
:
: A) Joni definitely refers to Joni Mitchell. This was the first song
: recorded for the project and felt reminiscent of some of the material on
: Blue. The other names reference actual friends/schoolmates of Karin from
: Barnesville. The rubber tree was a tree outside of town that had a tire
: swing where high school kids would hang out and listen to music and
: drink beer and cheap Boone's Farm wine.
