I didn't read the books, but I know a fair bit about the story and 
characters from other exposure.

I wasn't a big fan of the effect chosen to show Frodo's point of view when 
he wore the ring.  Also, the motion seemed blurred a lot during fast 
action...but I wasn't in what you might consider an "upscale" theater.  I 
didn't like the casting choice for the Elvin king ("Agent Smith" from The 
Matrix.)  He just seemed...not right.  I suppose a lot of that could be 
because I had a hard time separating him from his previous role.

All in all, though, I'd say it's a good movie.  Unlike my recommendations 
for most movies, I'd say to go ahead and see this in a theater.  Be 
prepared to be surrounded by geeks, though - I thought it was a Comp. Sci. 
major meeting or something as I walked out.  Scary. =P
