Rembrandt, and John Singer Sargent.
I'm particularly struck by their use of color and light; and the expressions 
and details they've captured in their portraits amaze me.

I visit Mr. Rembrandt's self-portrait every time I'm on the Mall in DC... 
it's requisite.  It's like visiting a friend.  

There're plenty of others, including Botticelli and most of the 
Pre-Raphaelites, but those first two top the list at the moment.
