Romance that's not yucky:
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Antonia's Line
Sense & Sensibility
Shadowlands

Delightful adventure that's not shoot-em-up:
Adventures of Baron Muenchhausen, The
Iron Giant, The
October Sky
Princess Bride, The (also goes in romance, of course)

Thought-provoking:
Cradle Will Rock
Contact
13 Conversations About One Thing
Dark City
Fast, Cheap and Out of Control
In the Company of Strangers
Spirited Away (also goes in Adventure)
Twelve Angry Men
Waking Life

Comedies:
Arsenic and Old Lace
The Ladykillers
The Committments
Galaxy Quest
An Ideal Husband (also goes in romance)

Just a few thoughts.  Barely scratching the surface.  All top-notch films.  I
don't think you could go wrong with any of these, depending on your mood.
