agreed,
they definitely crammed way too much into one episode. The cuts to Willow
and Giles only skimmed the surface of what's been going on there. I hope
they do something with that.
I did think the episode was great overall though and it seems to be setting
up a good season. We get another mystery player with the new principal --
could he be a watcher or one of the council that decided to help Buff at
Sunnydale? We get a taste of the turmoil ahead for Willow. We get a few
plants of something brewing again at the hellmouth. It also brought us back
to the shows roots story wise by taking an idea from a classic horror show (a
bit newer this time though) and putting a twist on it: American Werewolf in
London.
I think the opening scene, while a bit puzzling, was setting up the ending
with Spike. I'm pretty sure the guy that closed the door on the girl rather
than helping was Spike - pre-dew. Then we cut directly to Buffy telling Dawn
it's all about power. Then again at the end, the last of the people Spike
sees is Buffy and what's she say "it's about power"
I thought that that whole scene at the end was the best part of the
episode and I bet it also ends up being the most revealing scene as to what's
coming -- at least for spikes character. There seemed to be a lot of
allusions in it. Also, going through the nerd -- wassisname, Glory, Adam,
the Mayor, Dru, The Master, to Buffy while keeping them all in character and
at the same time making it a train of Spike's own twisting thoughts was great
writing. Note that all of them were ones, that in some way, have threatened
his power/control.
One critique though "Spike - tortured vampire with a soul: been there done
that. (although so far it's been done impressively and we never got too much
of the beginning with Angel except in flashback so I'll wait to see what
happens before I'm too critical). I did think the lines: Buffy: "what did you
do?" Spike: " I tried to cut it out" were great.
