Ok, I failed to take my own suggestion and check the archive before I posted.

In fact, Mr. Dean's first post was Tue, 1 Jan 2002, and included the

So I stand corrected, but even more baffled... why, if someone IS familiar 
with our format and rapport, would they suggest that we be moderated and 
object to the 'chat-room'-like style that essentially defines our rapport and 
sense of community?

Still fighting crankiness...but nonetheless somewhat contrite...
