animation
at the risk of beating a dead horse,
i think it is a bit misleading to compare disney to just about anything.
The disney aesthetic, although effective in many ways, is a very limited
one. There are other animators who use the gesture of a line, or a line
quality, for example, in a way that disney wasn't interested. See Carolyn
Leafs THE STREET. The brothers quay use light and texture and rhythm in
ways that less obscure animators wouldn't even consider: see STREET OF
CROCODILES. The main character's movements are deliberately awkward but it
works in a way that ultimately makes the character that much more
expressive.
The one thing i loved about TLOTR live action was that the animators stole
ideas from the camera-as-medium. The distortion of a wide angle lens was
used in conjuction and mimicked in the animation. Congrats to the animators
for using softwear as a tool in stead of an aesthetic. For breaking out of
the flatness of digital by stealing ideas from other mediums.
The problem for me, in translating TLOTR to film is that it is sooooo
difficult to use pacing effectively. The struggle is over before it
starts.......hmmmmmm
