For my part, I try to use free downloads more as "demos," in that if I
find that I like the band, I almost always go out and purchase the CD.
One recent example is Linkin Park - they were on mp3 on a streaming
server, the whole album. I knew I liked the radio singles, but I didn't
know if I'd like the rest of the album. Having just bought the new
Nickleback cd and being extremely disappointed, I was hesitant to throw
more money away.

However, I found I really like the entire album, and ended up getting
the CD.

I must admit, however, that there are some bands that fall into a
somewhat different category - that of "popular artists that I don't mind
but I don't want to spend money on." Examples of these are such
Christian bands as Third Day or DC Talk. In short, and album that
pretty much everyone I know is going to own anyway, so my borrowing it
and ogging (mp3ing) it off on my computer isn't going to hurt the band,
yet it will allow me to relate and recognize that music when it's being
played in a group setting.

Ah, excellent choice. One of my more favorite albums that I've bought
in recent times. Their EP is pretty good, too. And incidentally, the
have several songs available for download at mp3.com.
