I went a couple of years ago on a civil case where the former deputy police chief of Gary, IN was suing the city, mayor, council, etc. for loss of job, defamation........
It seems the only non-corrupt person in this situation was the deputy chief. The mayor brought in a good old boy buddy with no real police experience in a town like Gary (the guy had actually only been a sgt. for a campus police dept). When the deputy found instances of missing evidence (including drugs), payoff, bribes, etc. he started investigating the chief and was soon stripped of his police powers, scandalized in the press, bodily escorted from his office...... The new chief then placed his girlfriend in the position of deputy, fired all the other cops that were involved in investigating his alleged corruption.
We awarded the fired deputy chief over $1 million. It was later overturned. TV corruption and conspiracy theories didn't seem so far out after all.
Lost faith in the system...........
