Re: Music
i'm wondering if my fairly recent discovery of over the rhine is what makes
me love FfR...i own all the records, and love them all (quite rare, it
seems) and i've been listening to OtR for 3 years now, with "patience" being
the first record i bought.
nonetheless, i find FfR to be quite a cohesive record. maybe i'm nuts. all
the songs sound like the same band performing on the same album, some of
them just have different moods. there are plenty records like that. one
word: beatles. two words: tori amos. out of all the songs on that record,
there is only one i don't particularly care for, and that is "whatever you
say". i don't know...it just doesn't appeal to me.
anyway, being a fan who has only seen them in concert in the past year, i
can't say much about the progression/regression theory, but i like "goodbye"
(the first track from "roaring lambs" to really catch me) and i love "little
blue river"...sure, it's better live, but that has nothing to do with the
way it's recorded, imho...i think it has to do with the fact that the
personality of that song just translates better when the band can let loose
right in front of you, and you can feel it when karin launches into the
"oohs"...it's a foot that doesn't fit well into a pair of shoes.
as for the new "moth", i like it. i don't really go either way on the song.
it's a good song, i like both versions, it depends on what mood i'm in. end
of my story.
i have to disagree with those who feel that most of the tracks are
filler..."fairpoint diary" is one of my favourites off the album, with that
whole beatle-esque feel, and just the sound. it works for me. "world can
wait", the whole intense, cinematic Bond thing..."give me strength"...i've
said lots on that one..."stairway..." love it. the groove reminds me of
early '90s rap, a little.
i'm not a cheesy commercial pop-buyer who misses the lilith fair too
much...but i love the record and i'm glad they made it.
jillian.
