For the same reason Canadians love to find folks in the mainstream (i.e.,
American) world who are Canadian.  Culturally marginalized people always
like to discover that one of their own has "made it" -- but then there
come the debates over whether their people have "sold out" by going
mainstream (for example, is it really fair to consider Neil Young or Jim
Carrey Canadian any more, given how thoroughly Americanized they are?).
