if you like kate bush, try tori amos.  you'll
probably think that tori's kinda derivative of
kate, though. :)  "boys for pele" is a good one,
or "little earthquakes," "under the pink," "from
the choirgirl hotel," or even "to venus and back."
it's all good.

since you like ben folds five, have you gotten
"fear of pop: volume 1"...?  it's ben folds' first
solo album.  it's fun, and it's got a GREAT
collaboration with william shatner.  ps- ben folds
(the man, not the band) is currently working on
his 2nd solo album to be out this spring
(hopefully).  darren jesse is also working on solo
stuff.

you noted a fondness for peter gabriel and 70s
progressive... check out chroma key.  i always
recommend that band.  in fact, if you buy one and
don't like it- i'll buy it off of you.  chroma key
is the offshoot from the former keyboardist of
dream theater (a 90s prog band that's like kansas
meets metallica).  anyway, chroma key's albums are
like tori amos, pink floyd, peter gabriel, trent
reznor, and david bowie...

  jurassic 5 - quality control: the best rap album
of 2000.  old school, back-to-the-basics rap in
the Y2K.  it's all about the elements: DJing,
breakin', taggin', MCing.  it's not "bitches and
ho's..." like most (c)rap out there.  it's
original rap and good musicianship in the DJing.

  aperfect circle - mer de noms: the best hardrock
album of the past couple years.  it's the new band
by maynard james keenan, the brains behind the
scary-art-metal band tool.  and it's way more
"normal" than tool.  bruce would probably be
scared anyway... :)

  radiohead - kid a: one of my favs of 2000.  a
brilliant soundscape.  these guys are masters of
everything aural.

  sunny day real estate - the rising tide: i just
got into them, but they're a very good band.
"emo" music, i guess is what it's called.  it's
good...

  fiona apple - when the pawn... : this has been
on high rotation this week.

  incubus - make yourself (and) s.c.i.e.n.c.e. :
the best new band that i've gotten into.  it's
like a faith no more of the now, with a DJ instead
of a keyboardist.  good vocals, good hard rock.

i don't know if any of that is what you're looking
for, but i figured i'd drop my $.07 anyhow...
