I heard a story about this film a few years ago and wondered if anybody
else heard it. I got it straight from Rex Reed, but it still seems a
little incredible. We all know that Marisa Tomei won Best Supporting
Actress for her role in this little flick. We also know she didn't
deserve it, being up against Vanessa Redgrave, Miranda Richardson and the
like. It would be easy to assume that it happened because Marisa was the
only A'Murcan in the bunch, but Rex told a different story. It seems
that Jack Palance, who presented the award, came on the show heavily
under the influence of foreign substances. I don't know if it was drugs
or booze or both, but he was acting mighty stupid. Anyway, he read the
nomination and when it came time to announce the winner, which was
supposed to have been Vanessa Redgrave for 'Howard's End', he instead
read the last name on the nominee list, which was Marisa Tomei. So she
got the statue.
Sounds kind of unlikely, but I did hear it straight from Rex himself.

Anybody else hear this?
