Re: and...
hi guys-
a friend just let me know that my last post was kind of cryptic. then i
read paul's message that was giving support to what i was pitifully trying
to encourage.
>what do you mean by "applicable higher ground"?
what amy joy and kelven were taking by saying it was better to spend their
time with face to face (aka practice of theology) than talking about all
this stuff (aka theory of theology). and i don't disagree with their
sincere attention to the practice aspect. i just think we need both.
>"dumbed down by the evangelical movement".
what happens is that often we (the church) get so into the practice thing
that we leave ourselves and those we train without any foundation and
without intimate, mental understandings or at least interaction with the
major principles of christianity etc. we get dumbed down. we don't want to
think ahead, we only want to do. it's like the difference b/w most older,
mainline churches and the charasmatic movement--and i'm talking about
extremes on both ends to illustrate the point. the mainline has this great
fire place built, well-constructed, founded on excellence etc.-- but no fire
(the holy spirit in this case). then the charasmatics have NO fire place
and lots of fire: a big mess as well. i think we need both.
>understand the part about dichotomies and dismissing the intellectuals.
the dichotomy was theory vs. practice and dissmissing intellectuals was
basically knocking that fireplace i mentioned, denying one in favor of the
other when in reality we need both.
so, harp, harp, harp. :) no need for either side of the big picture to
grumble against the other. and that extends out past christianity and out
past issues of theory and practice. over the rhine is such a great
conglomeration of beauty and hearty ideas. we discuss both on this list.
hasta luego-
marie
