Is Lay It Down typical? Yes and no... their older albums are far far
darker and more moody. In recent times they have become more pop-sounding
and so forth and that is (IMO) apparent on LID more than any of the albums
before it. If you want something happier and more catchy than LID, check
out Miles From Our Home. If you want something more bleak, quiet, and
depressed, try Black Eyed Man or Caution Horses. I guess I've never thought
of them as being much like OtR, but rather as something that people who like
OtR could appreciate.
