Homosexuality vs Christianity--The debate that was inevitable.
Okay, I have purposely refrained from entering this discussion because
it was going pretty well without me, but I feel that there are a few
points that I should make about this.
Adultery, murder, abortion etc. can not be accurately classed with
homosexuality. Granted, I believe they are all sins, but the
distinction comes from the fact that adulterers, murderers, et al are
not openly entering our conservative churches and saying, "Here I am,
this is my lifestyle and I want the same relationship with God that the
rest of the congregation has. I will not admit that my choice of
lifestyle counters your core beliefs, and by the way, I am not going to
stop cheating on my wife/husband," (or) "I am not going to stop killing
people so forget about telling me I'm wrong--your belief in that respect
is narrow and unfounded."
To continue, murderers, adulterers, and other "agreed"
sinners/wrongdoers are not contending for equal and protected status in
our communities. How ludicrous would it have been if Ted Bundy, or
Jeffrey Damer had rallied for serial killing or cannibalism to be given
equal time in a first grade class being taught family lifestyles? How
would you feel if your co-worker openly admitted to having a 20 year
adulterous affair with your own spouse and then demanded the same
health/retirement benefits that you had shared throughout your 20 plus
years of marriage with that person?
But, the differences are not the main issue; the similarities are.
Homosexuality does counter a fundamental Christian belief, and this
lifestyle is potentially more dangerous to our culture today than either
of the above examples. NO, murderers and adulterers are not lobbying
for equal rights, but gays are. Murderers and adulterers are not being
given the okay to continue with their lifestyles openly as if theirs was
simply an alternative to the standard--gays are. And murderers and
adulterers are not infiltrating our collective consciousness as
contenders for diversity, again, gays are.
"So what," you say. "It's not hurting anyone, being sexually
attracted to your same sex is nothing like murder. There's no harm or
danger in it." Maybe not, but then, maybe so. The big issue with me,
and with other Christians, is the fact that we are being told, (not
asked) to concede our beliefs on this. Do the tables seem turned? Why
am I expected to change my belief structure just because literally
thousands of people have no regard for it? Funny isn't it? Not
really. Just say, *if* I turn my back and allow a blatant contradiction
to my beliefs slide under the proverbial rug--what's next? Murder,
adultery, genocide? Who's to say? If Christians buckle on this, we may
as well step aside and allow every heresy out there into our open arms.
I for one cannot.
I am not condoning gay bashing, or any form of discrimination. People
who continually point to those of us in society who do focus on these
things are self defeating. If you think only Christianity has wacko's
you're completely one sided in that belief. Do you remember the
Heaven's Gate Cult, Jim Johnson and the kool aid? For every crazy
charismatic out there, there are hundreds of sane ones. If not for a
belief in something higher than is tangibly conceived, where would we
be? Certainly not in America. And if not for a belief in some form of
semblance, or order we would be in anarchy.
Faith is a paradox. We can't explain it, but we cling to it
inerrantly as if we could. My faith is in Jesus Christ--I have to
believe that if he allowed a scripture to withstand two thousand years
of scrutiny, it has withstood for a purpose (Rom 1:26-7, Lev 18:22). To
discount this instruction as narrow or unfounded is at the very least
selfish, and at worst, deadly. By ignoring the Bible (in this
instance), one places sex above divine instruction, and to defend any
belief or activity higher than God is to idolize that belief or
activity. Homosexuality is neither complicated nor paradoxical. It is
a sin, and like any other sin, it carries no heavier weight than that of
a catalyst which seperates people from God.
Without contempt,
Mark
