Relatedly, and I think someone mentioned this already, if you DO have 
your hearts set on a particular purebred, there are rescue groups for 
almost every breed in almost every state. My sister and her husband 
recently got a border collie who'd come all the way from Memphis. (We 
live in PA.) No, she did not come with a guitar. She was sent so far 
because the folks who found her originally thought she was a Karelian 
Bear Dog, so they sent her to the appropriate rescue in Maryland, from 
whence she came to our family.

My parents, who are as enthralled with my Kayli as I am, will not 
consider any kind of dog save a Collie, and they often check the Collie 
Rescues online. Not, of course, that they'll ever find a dog to equal my 
baby, but every dog deserves a good home.

I guess that's the bottom line.
