I think a key difference is how the profiling is used.  Say a suspect in 
a murder case is identified as a white male in his forties.  This 
immediately eliminates a vast majority of the population from suspicion. 
 This is the *good* kind of profiling.  It focuses on eliminating people 
from suspicion.  Compare this with the recent anti-arab profiling, where 
there is no crime necessarily committed.  It it looking for a person to 
attack, instead of looking for people to relieve of suspicion.
