profiling and my arabic friends

is there any good argument out there to eliminate
profiling? i know it stinks and causes
inconvenience--but it's not the equivalent of
discrimination. it seems to be used in all situations
for any race/religion etc. i think about the recent
kidnapping of elizabeth smart...the authorities have
profiled that lunatic and hit up the lovely white
male. so i don't think i can see how it's unfair.

i was hanging out with my friend, lez, a muslim
jordanian who used to live in tallahassee (graduate
work) and was visiting us one week (from japan where
he's doing his post-doc). i asked him about his
experiences lately with travelling etc., and he said
it was inconvenient but that he understood and
actually appreciated it. he has nothing to hide and
would rather have a safe flight.
