what keeps mankind alive? (was RE: literate music)
What an extraordinarily good question for the end of a long day. I'll get to the connection later...
Anyone seen Jacob the Liar? The main character in the film created stories about an imminent Russian invasion to give people hope, with the result of cutting 5 suicides a day down to nothing. Let me toss out a real life example too. I've spent a bit of time off and on over the past two years working in a factory, and talking to some of the people who are permanent employees was sad. One lady has three kids (result of poor life choices yes, but the story fits...) and wanted to be a professional photographer, but never got the chance. She was envious of my opportunity to go to school. There's no hope that her life situation will ever change, and it showed in her work.
The personal connection for me is that I've had a long day and I'm tired, yet I still have a good four or five hours of homework to do. I still have the hope of the good feeling that comes from completing it though, and previous experience dictates that this will be worth the time that needs to be put in. And someday (this May, actually), I will graduate and move on to other crazier things. Thanks for a good question...thinking about it was a much needed breath of fresh air for me in a moment that I needed a happy thought...
Grace and peace,
Heather
