Re: literate music

<< who or what are the most literate performers you can think of, and what works do they reference? >>

In a high school English class our teacher was teaching us what an allusion was, and as an exercise she asked us to bring in a song that made a literary allusion.  I chose (yes, it was a long time ago and a Jan far, far away) "Innocence Lost" performed by Susan Ashton but written by Wayne Kirkpatrick.  I am not so familiar with Christian music anymore, but in that genre, I would say that Wayne Kirkpatrick is one of the smartest, most talented, and probably most literate Christian songwriters out there.  So he'd get my vote.

On the other side of the tracks, I like the references I see creeping up in Indigo Girls songs--Biblical, literary, social, and otherwise.  And nicely integrated to boot.
