A guy just can't win, can he?

Usually, by myself. Don't worry, this is usually by
choice. I don't want to sit and socialize, I want to
watch the darned movie. I do have one friend that I
can share movies with who walked back into my life a
few years ago. Thank God for short Doctors!

Well, I understand the whole hate thing and the fact
that it is indeed real. That should not be minimized.
However, there is another huge point the film made.
What were the reasons behind the hate? It brought out
the fact, particularly in the discussion with the
father, that the hate is based on fears and that there
sometimes may very well be ligitimate reasons for
those fears. I don't think the film was in the
slightest condoning the violence and racism the the
Norton character was guilty of and tried to save his
brother from. I think it was just saying that, as in
everything, there are two sides to the story and the
whole bigger issue in our society will never be dealt
with until both sides are given a full, respectful
hearing.
When I first saw it and watched the scene where Norton
was folding laundrey in the prison with the black
fellow, I thought the black fellow said "Now we can
know each other in peace." I thought that was so
profound - as long as there is violence and hatred,
there is no hope of knowing each other. When he made
"peace" with the black man, he was able to "Know" him.
On the second viewing I realized he said "now we can
*ignore* each other in peace." I was crushed.
Anyway...you asked...

yeah, he's darned good. It's a shame Roberto Begnini
won the best actor oscar that year instead of Norton.
Alas...
