It truly is a shame, but I think to an extent it goes back to the fact that
_American History X_ was such a controversial film, and not just because of
the subject matter.  I read where the director was on the warpath throughout
the film's release because he was unhappy with the final cut, with the
advertising, with the way the distribution was handled; he was basically mad
at the world about every aspect of the film, it seemed.  Sometimes, that
kind of controversy hurts worse than the kind surrounding subject matter.
