Re: VoL vs OtR

Yes, it sucks a lot. He was really cool. I loved his lapsteel work- a lot
more interesting than Jack's... :P Plus, he was just an all-around great
stringed instrumental plus for VoL's music of late. He'll be missed.

Well, the difference is that Kenny decided to leave based on being burnt
out with the road, etc. Ric & Brian (& probably Mike) left due to being
burnt out with a certain someone and the band in general (ie- not the
road). That probably makes it have different attitude angles...

Band departures and break-ups can mean better things, though. I love Mike
Georgin, Slant, and Monk's work. We wouldn't have that (most likely), if
the above things didn't happen.

On other fronts, some band departures have created some of the greatest
music recently for ME. Nuno's (and Mourning Widows) two albums have been
two of my favorite albums in the past few years after Extreme broke up.
Mike Patton's work with Mr. Bungle was gotten a whole lot better (IMO)
since Faith No More broke up. And Kevin Moore's Chroma Key albums are my
favorite music **BY FAR** since he left Dream Theater back in 1994. So
many people (in various newsgroups and personal friends of mine) were
pissed off when the above break-ups happened. I see it as a way to get
new, fresh musical ideas.

I can listen to both Dream Theater *and* Kevin Moore's stuff and get
something totally new and fresh out of it. Likewise, I can listen to
Slant, Monk, *and* OtR and get totally different forms of musical expression.

In fact, the frequency of releases magnifies, too... how many OtR-related
CDs have come out in the past two years: ASR, IDTTNNTBN, Slant, Georgin's
solo, Hush, Blink, plus a rumored new OtR in December, and a new Slant CD
soon...

Life is good.
