if you'll permit me to be all grad-student intellectual-like:

i think music, as such, cannot be irrelevant, because i think that
music is created partly in dialogue with other music(s). the velvet
underground- r.e.m. example is good. but you can expand it. who were
the velvets' influences?

the beatles, for one (in a reverse sort of way, but there's still a
kind of conversation going on- lennon says 'x' and lou reed responds
with '-x.' but i'm oversimplifying here) and some r&b stuff.

so let's look at it like this:

r&b -> beatles -> velvet underground -> r.e.m.

but we know that bands like radiohead have claimed r.e.m as an
influence, so:

r&b -> beatles -> velvet underground -> r.e.m -> radiohead -> ?

again, this is overly simplistic. think of it like "six degrees of
seperation" only think of the musical "conversations" that are going
on. r.e.m combines country, rock, las vegas easy listening, etc and
comes up with r.e.m.'s contribution to the conversation.

or go look at the digest for this discussion.
