What's up with all of the politicking?

Yes.  Now that I have your attention I would like to comment on misdirection this mailing list has recently made.  I’m pretty sure, mainly because I checked again, that the reason the list exists is to share our love for over-the-rhine.  Now while I may or may not share your political affiliation, I don’t agree any of it belongs in this venue, even if the majority of readers agree with our position.  Consider this:  As OTR continues to grow in popularity, so does the possibility of their reaching a broader audience.  Will our comments affect the way people perceive OTR?  I don’t know.  All I know is that if I came out to this mailing list before I had a chance to meet them, and find out how much I truly appreciate them for their creative “world”, “life” contribution, I may have never given them a chance.  What I’m saying is this.  Words mean something.  I’m not trying to step on toes.  Lord knows I’m very junior to most of the group.  Look, if I’m wrong, I’m sure I’ll find out about it soon enough.  I’ve got big shoulders (and a support group… Jesus and Mary….).  If I’m asked to leave, well then it’s been (mostly) fun, and I’ll show myself out.

Ok, with all of that said.  I wanted to share my experience of last night’s “Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour” recording with you: (http://www.woodsongs.com)

If you are not aware of the program (most of the “old timers” just skip this section), Woodsongs is an hour long program recorded in the heart of the bluegrass, Lexington, KY.  Typically, the program includes bands that don’t normally get the playtime they deserve on “top 40” radio stations around the country.  Phrases you will typically associate with the bands on this show would be stuff like “up and coming”, “aspiring”, and “progressive”.  As a matter of fact, along with OTR was another band from upstate NY, moe. (moe – all lowercase with a period at the end, btw, I did not know this tidbit)  They will (eventually) post the show.  While your waiting, be sure to catch their previous show from a few years ago. (BTW, if you have the same problem as me the “video” option above the “over the rhine” show is actually the OTR show.  Don’t ask me why they didn’t fix this.  I had to download both to see the right show.  Ok?  Download video show #232 -à http://webcast.msc.uky.edu/woodsongs-232.wmv )

Last nights show included “Ohio”, “Long Lost Brother”, Bothered” (very similar to the version at the end of the Eve album.) and ended with Hallelujah (I know, most people already know but this was originally performed by Leonard Cohen, BTW.)  If you have a public radio station in your area of the world, I highly recommend checking to see if this program runs.  Worst case (and this isn’t bad either) you could check out the archived video (in a few days) and see if you can pick me out in the crowd.  I’m the one yelling “yeee haaaa!!!”

Something else for the group to ponder on:  Am I the only person who didn’t know that Linford is working on a solo project?  Let’s talk about this for a while.  Those of you who follow my advice on the show above will be tickled by some of the interesting things Linford had to say.  I mean, I can’t wait to try it out with our children (This should be enough of a teaser to get you to listen…) Now don’t you all go out there at once and kill their server…

PS.  I hope you all have a nice evening.

Eric

Also, before you consider sending a hateful response (which you undoubtedly regret the next morning… I know you all have kind hearts and wouldn’t want to say mean things about your brother) be sure to check out the guidelines for the list: (I’ll help y’all out… Here they are:)

BASIC GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO THE LIST:

1)  Do NOT include the entire message when replying (unless the original

message was very short, or you are responding line-by-line).

 2)  When you want to introduce a new topic for discussion it's a good idea

to "prime the pump" with some discussion of your own, rather than just

sending a message saying "Lets talk about xxxxxxx."

3)  No matter how good the cause is, or how urgent the message you want to

forward - if it has nothing to do with Over the Rhine then it is off-topic

and inappropriate for the list.  We don't want to hear about

the "Good Times" virus or a sick child who wants postcards.

4)  Flaming will not be tolerated.  If you have an uncontrollable need to

flame someone send the message directly to them - not to the list.

5)  Use the subject line appropriately.  For example, if you're responding to

a post and you get the digest, when you hit reply the subject is going to

default to Re: Over-the-Rhine Digest #473, or something close to that.

Change it to something relevant to what you're posting.

6)  Don't send messages to the list that say only "Me too" or "I agree".

7)  Relationships form because of this list that bring people a lot of

happiness. (We recently had our first listie wedding.) Please use discretion:

when you feel the urge to communicate directly with someone about topics

unrelated to Over the Rhine, e-mail them directly. Messages sent to the

entire list should regard Over the Rhine.
