Yep, makes me think of Sarah McL on building a mystery "you're so beautiful/a beautiful fucked-up man".  Sometimes you need a word with a certain sharpness -- to convey the most complex feelings sometimes you need the simplest, most loaded word.  Sometimes messed-up just won't cut it.
