Yeah, I am largely responsible for passing on that particular linguistic
pattern. I'm Aaron's longtime friend from Portland, and have returned to
Trinity to finish my religious studies degree and pick up a communications
minor.
People from the Portland-metro area will refer to Vancouver, WA as "The 'Couv"
as a way of belittling it, some affectionately, some not. It is a bit small and
dumpy compared to its neighbor to the south, Portland. I began calling
Vancouver, BC "The 'Couv" as a way of belittling it, since I have a love-hate
relationship with the city. It is sometimes beautiful, has some good cultural
amenities, and is home to many of the most amazing and beautiful people I have
ever known, but it is also huge and unruly, with not enough freeways, far too
many identical, green-glassed apartment buildings cluttering its skyline, far
too many gravel-sided houses on its streets, and, worst of all, I'm not allowed
to work there and be around those I love.
So, that's my defense. Who knows? Maybe "The 'Couv" will catch on around these
parts. :)
