Re: poptarts with a twist of lennon

Peter:

I would place economics over religion, personally. >>

I haven't either but from what I do know I'd have to agree. I remember
Walter Martin once replying to a statement that laid the blame on religion
for a majority of wars that if you tally up the deaths resulting from overt
religious wars next to those caused by megalomanic rulers, communist regimes,
etc., it'd be something like 1%.

Nice point Matt by the way IMO. It's more man's lust for
power, control, revenge, whathaveyou, that cause millions to die as a result.
The vast majority civilians. They may use religion as an excuse at times to
salve their conscience but it boils down to man's drive to dominate others.
Of course there were the OT battles, but again, if you stack them up
alongside others they are minute in comparison. Even the Crusades, with by
far the most bloody and inexcusable things ever done in the name of Christ
(after killing 40,000+ Moslems in Jerusalem one group herded Jews into a
synagogue and burned it to the ground) are small in comparison. NOT
excusable, only small in comparison to major atrocities.

a couple choice wars: (statistics seem to vary wildly to some of these)

1221: Nishapur, Persia 1,747,000 dead in revenge for an arrow coming from
it's wall that killed Jinghiz Khan's son-in-law.
12th century: Rayy, Persia: 1.6 million slaughtered when Jinghiz Kahn sent
his army in to destroy the entire population for rebelling.
*the Mongol khans and their successors slaughtered around 30,000,000 Persian,
Arab, Hindu, Russian, Chinese, and European men women and children.

Marxist governments killed up to 95,000,000 people. 61,000,000 between
1917-54.
Japanese military killed over 6 million Chinese, Koreans, Fillipinos,
Indochinese and western prisoners of war between 1970 - 1980
Cambodia wiped out approximately 4 million of it's 7.1 million population.
Nearly 2.4 million of these by the communist Khmer Rouge.
Turkey: WWl - attempt to wipe out every Arminian in the country -- all 2
Million.
between 1900-1923 various Turkish regimes killed 3.5 to 4.3 million
Armenians, Greeks, Nestorians, and other Christians
Vietnam in the span of 6 wars:( the indochian war, vietnam war, cambodian
war, guerilla wars in cambodia, laos, and sino-vietnamese war) as many as
3.8 million killed. Nearly 1 of 10 men, women, and children. Of these about
1.25 million were murdered outright.
