Dream set-list, etc.

I'm in the mood to stir up a little conversation, and besides
all I ever get in my inbox anymore is spam, so it will be good to
get some flames and hate mail....

In my last e-mail I said...

> And yeah, I'd pay double to hear "Sea And Sky", "Eyes Wide Open",
>or "Within, Without" one more time...

...and I suppose that's true, but you know what? It wouldn't
bother me if they never played them again. I say that because they
consistently crank out new good music. I'm all for nostalgia, but
if I really want to hear "If I'm Drowning" with each member leaving
the stage one at a time at the end of the song, I can always pop
_Besides_ into the CD player. Given the choice between seeing a
concert where Over the Rhine played every _Patience_ song one right
after the other or seeing Over the Rhine debut five or six new songs,
I'd eagerly buy a ticket for the second. Anyone agree? Disagree?

I would hate to see a band so creative get trapped like most bands
where every night they have to deliver a "greatest hits" setlist.
Most bands that are 10+ years old are haunted by their early fans
demanding to hear "Roundabout" (oops, now you know what other
band I like..) night after night. There really isn't one song in
Over the Rhine's setlist that if dropped, would cause Virgin Records
to call them on the cell phone and demand their heads on a plate,
and maybe that's a good thing.

I guess I've heard "Poughkeepsie" 10 times, but it's still special
to that person who's seeing Over the Rhine for the first time. So,
that's cool. But "Jack's Valentine", my gosh. They _must_ be
tired of it, right?

So, requesting all the oldies is a good thing, and I do love it
when a band throws the old fans a bone, but I'm all for moving forward.
Sorry if this seems sort of random... that's what you get when the
compiler is running and I ain't got nothing better to do...

    Peace,

    Jeff
