Re: Karin's beauty
Well, to chime in on this topic, I have to say that (for me) I can
thankfully say that outward beauty does not influence my musical enjoyment
(and that was a surpise for me to realize). I tend to be very motivated by
outward appearances, despit the fact that they're so unimportant in the
grand scheme of things.
The beauty of an artist is not just in their physical appearance, but
also in the spirit that wrote the music and/or lyrics. When you get to know
someone (whether closely, or through several short chats, like with Karin)
the persons spirit shows on the outside. A person's spirit, if beautiful,
will make up for any "inadiquacy" in their physical appearance. Likewise,
someone who is "hot" on the outside, but has a wretch of a spirit will be
ugly when you get to know them.
A great example of this is Cheryl Wheeler. She has a wonderfully honest,
sweet, beautiful, deep and wise voice. She writes incredible lyrics, and
digs deep to the heart of situations; whether serious or humorous. Many
would say her physical appearance does not match her beautiful voice,
though. She's a (truly) frumpy 50 year old woman with a beer belly.
Doesn't dress up for concerts: comes in jeans and a casual shirt. But her
spirit shows through her music. She is a beautiful woman, despite anything
that may be on the "outside".
Music is powerful to me whether or not the singer is sexy. I think
that's a good position to be in. I hope that's the consensus with others
here, too. I certainly don't look like Tom Cruise, and I would be really
hurt if people discounted my artwork simply because I'm not as sexy as he
is. I think I would also be bothered if people put more stock in my artwork
if I did look like Tom. Shouldn't the work speak for itself? Beauty is
beauty, whether the person who made it is tradtionally "beautiful" or not.
Well, there's my rambling 2 cents...errr...maybe there's actually 5 or 6
cents in there =)
Sincerely;
Daniel J. Summers
