Re: Vegetarian?

You know, Drew, a fella by the name of Vishal Mangalwadi did some very
nice monographs on the allure of vegetarianism, particularly in regard to
metaphysics and socio-economic grounds in his home country that you
might find interesting. Might depend on your religious bent (he's a
converted Christian from southern India who was educated as part of the
Brahman caste, and I forget what your particular beliefs are <shrug>). I
think his lecture on vegetarianism is at his website,
www.wisdomfromindia.com. Good stuff.

In general, I'm a bit of a fan of Sri Mangalwadi. I did a lot of college
work on Indian history and culture, and it was frankly a pleasure to hear
a man talk about India from a Christian context that wasn't patronizing
and infantile. I got to hear him speak a little on Gandhi at a L'Abri
conference - meant to ask him a few questions about the Ramayana and
Mahabharata in today's culture, but I ran out of time. Oh well.

Ok, really going out on a limb here. Is anyone here familiar with the
poetry of Namdeo Dhasal? An incredible poet from the Dalit caastes
(untouchables, for those playing at home?) Incredible, incredible poetry
filled with passion for his homeland and anger for it. One of his best
compares his relationship with India to having a mother who is a
prostitute.
