I'll admit I'm dumb

Hey, before you just dismiss this as a stupid question, allow me to
elaborate. For one thing, I realize that the scholars in question could
simply omit vowels, as Dan and Peter discussed earlier today, and as you do,
but do they do this with more lengthy descriptives such as "the creator"?
(You said "however you chose to say it" so I gotta ask.) Now, all I know
about this custom comes from seeing the movie "Pi" (great flick) and reading
somewhere that temple priests/rabbi can't speak the name of God out of
reverence. So, this makes me wonder, can the writings of Jewish scholars be
read aloud? How about to yourself? When you read the word "G-d", don't you
say the word "God" to yourself? Have I been misinformed? Are you indeed
allowed to say it, just not write it?

This may sound like ridicule. It isn't. I find this subject to be
fascinating, and am an ignorant man seeking enlightenment.

Speaking of which, is the term "God" a name or a title? If so, then saying
"Jimi Hendrix is a God" would qualify as taking the Lord's name in vain,
right? Anybody have any thoughts regarding the whole name vs. title issue.
One thing that occurs to me since I've been forced to revaulate my whole
stance on this is that I cringe when I hear someone say "Christ" as an
expletive, but am downright offended when I hear the name "Jesus" used in
the same manner. So, I can certainly understand the whole wanting to refer
to God as "G-d" thing, regardless of whether it be perceived as a title or a
name, though I'd never regarded the "generic term God as being as meritous
of reverence as the title "Christ".

Thanks for getting me to really think about this...
