how to tell an urban legend (Re: I HAVE A VIRUS TRANS)

here are some easy tips on how to discover if something is potentially and
urban legend...

1. play son general fears or assumptions shared by a lot of people.
2. claims to expose a public danger.
3. sometimes they invovle high public figures. sometimes not.
4. usually are accompanied by some sort of official endorsement.

some common characteristics:
- general email/conversation - not reliable source (news agency, etc).
- no refereal to mainstream source for documentation (sometinmes they are
cited incorrectly or falsely)
- no true contact info (or falsified contact info)
- inconsistent style
- relies on independent action
- no true specifics
- authorizatin to pass it on to everyone you know.

antyning you receive unsolicited should be checked for attachments, and
scrutinised thouroughly before reading and allowing credibilty.

this is spam of another type. unsolicited falsities from someone you may
or may not know.

and before forwarding, check snopes, check urbanmyths.com etc.

and be sure to tell whomever sent it what you discover. eventually, they
will either get wise and think for themselves, or get tired of you raining
on their parade, and sotp sending you emails such as these.

eitehr way, you win.

that is all (tm)
