Spend much time in the Pitt?
I took a class this semester past in Broadcast Voice (oop, almost said
Broadcast Vice... that's next year)
Basically, its learning how to talk like you're not from anywhere. It helped
on a lot of fronts (I'm a performance poet by trade, so I learned a lot of
great tricks that you don't get in theatre or lit or even workshop classes)
One of the things I learned is about "regional variations" My prof could
basically peg where everyone in the class was from (anywhere inthe US and
mainland China) down to about the county. R/V, better known as "accents" are
in many ways, with the exception of some environments factors that can be
observed, a fairly unexplainable phenomenon, aside from maybe an underlying
sense of community. It has been hypothized (and backed) that is you were to
take, say, 100 people, and move them all to the same dome on say, Mars, and
let them run, in about 5 years you'd have a dialectic and "accent" that
would be about like your (I need a better word then stereotypical-
suggestions) Bronx hoodlum trying to talk to a Scottish punker.
run than booradly process down a while, huh?
Basically, second person plural is a failure (like the limits of such words
as "sterotypical" in modern parley) of the English language itself.
So, my preference is for Ya'll (even though the proper contraction would be
y'all, ya'll is a preferred variant) not because it's gender unspecific, but
beause it is closer to the ideas that I picked up in4 years of high school
spanish.
D.M.
actually being an English academic for a bit
and any picking on my english in the post will be chuckled at, so nyah!
PS: we could do 2001 again, but I'm not sure I wouldn't rather eat a bullet
than deal with most of that year again.
