back when  emteevee didn't completely suck,  there was a segment (tragically
brief)   called,  i think,   Guest VJ.    if you can't fathom the concept,
it goes:    regular veejay  yields an hour or two (two?  that seems
unlikely)  of his/her  show  to a "guest veejay"   almost always a musician,
maybe throw in an actor here and there,    and that guest gets to  (here's
the cool part)  peruse the vast library of video's available,      and
select whatever they want to play.    oh, yeah:   and play it!

this stellar idea had a couple intrinsic flaws:
1) mtv  was well on the road to suckville;  consequently many of the guest
veejays were residents of suckville or nearby suckburghs  or sucktowns;  and
consequently the chosen videos  weren't too far off the beaten path of what
we were getting anyway.
2)  given that the show's time slot didn't expand beyond two hours  (and i'm
probably doubling it at that)  the time reserved for commercial breaks
encroached into the guests playlists.   too bad they couldn't have made that
segment commercial -free.


granted,  gripe #2  wasn't much of a problem when gripe #1's  veejay was,
say,   maybe  Jon Bon Jovi or Vanilla Ice or.....coming up blank on more
sucky people,    but when  they chose, say,  an  Elvis Costello,   and when
Elvis chose to play Tom Waits'  __in the neighborhood__  video,   well, it
was criminal how short it lasted.

who even knew tom waits had a video?   nirvana!  (no,  not the band...they
came much later.  "and i swear that i don't have a gun"   (guess he lied) ).

so from that moment on,  i've been waiting at  home,  wishing i'd get that
call from the offices of emteevee,   telling me they are making a  Guest VJ
Show Redux,  and perhaps i'd like to be one of the  hosts.       damn.  they
probably called when i was out buying toilet paper or dental floss or
something.     paradise lost.

and yeah,  i'd play  __happy with myself__.     and i'd play that pixies
video.  the one where when they sing they just open their mouths.  i never
saw that one.   db did.   damn again.

oh, but wait.   emteevee probably threw out all the good shit.   manhattan
space don't come cheap, ya know.

maybe i could move to canada and pitch the idea to much music.    they have
that law that forces them to play a large percentage of canadian stuff.    i
can deal.  i like loreena.   joni.  jane.   bruce.  margo and the boys.
neal and alex and that screechy guy.   the other neil.  (ok,  that was a
lie.  i don't really like neil).   db likes that odd little band with the
odd little lyrics.   i forget thei.....bare naked ladies!  is anyone else
canadian?  not that suck guy.  don't mention him.   i forget his name, too,
and i'd like to keep it that way.   if you know him, just shut up.

isn't celine dion canadian?   alright, i won't play her stuff, either.

drew and bruce:  you don't know how good you have it.   (well,  maybe you
do.)
