RE: my diatribe about concept and thematic albums and recommendations therein

I'm gonna borrow Dan's words of warning, as this response is pretty lengthy.

"**WARNING**"
"Useless trivial knowledge and possible musical recommendations coming up...
I'm just like this...
I've accepted my fate... 26 total. Skip it if you don't wanna read for a
while."

Subject: my diatribe about concept and thematic albums and recommendations
therein

Dan wrote, among other things:

"... But I'd definitely say that there are *tons* of concept and thematic
albums in the metal scene... I chalk that up to the classical music and
storytelling style that is conducive to metal music, in general."
Definitely. Two of my favorite classical works are Holst's "The Planets"
and Mussorgski's "Pictures at an Exhibition". Emerson Lake and Palmers
composition of Pictures is also a great work in the genre of Prog. Rock.
As for some on Dan's list.
-> Alice Cooper _The Last Temptation_ (Epic, 1994)
I also highly recommend this one, even if you aren't a fan of Alice Cooper.
He has two recent CD's out that are part of a trilogy of post-apocalyptic
themed works. Unfortunately, the newest, Dragontown, was released just a
week ago, one month after the WTC and DC terrorism. Even though the songs
were written long before Sept. 11, and they describe fictional futuristic
events, it is VERY hard to listen to. Much of it hits way to close to home
now. This is good in some ways, and bad in others.
-> Dream Theater _Awake_ (EastWest, 1994)
-> Dream Theater _A Change of Seasons_ (EastWest, 1995)
-> Dream Theater _Metropolis 2: Scenes from a Memory_ (EastWest, 1999)
I am also a HUGE Dream Theater fan. Dan summed these three up so well, I'll
just let it ride. (but find a way to listen to "Scenes...", it's one of the
best Progressive recordings ever, IMHO)

-> Fates Warning _A Pleasant Shade of Gray_ (Metal Blade, 1997)
I would only add Fates Warning _Still Life_ (Metal Blade, 1998). This is a
two disk live set. Disk 1 is a live version of Pleasant Shade of Gray.
-> Pink Floyd _
I think ALL Pink Floyd albums are concept albums.
-> Trans-Siberian Orchestra _Christmas Eve and Other Stories_ (Atlantic,
1997?)
This is WAY ironic. I just heard something on the radio earlier today about
this. There is a tour for 2001. The web site is at:
http://www.trans-siberian.com/noflash/xmas-eve.htm
They have a whole list of dates all over Ohio and the Midwest through
December.

I already posted once about favorite concept albums, but since the topic is
still alive, I'll add a couple more of my favorites:
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage (I think this may have been mentioned earlier)
Frank Zappa - Thing Fish. This one absolutely defies description. You just
have to hear it. I don't know that anybody would ever say they "liked" it,
but you gotta hear it just once.
