Not necessarily - as he says, the last thing he recalls is his wife
dying.  IE, he saw the image of his (what he presumed, at any rate) dead
wife before the hippocampus stopped working.

Which makes for another interesting thought - if this were true, it
would be entirely logical for Lenny to think that his wife had died in
the attack even if it turned out that she recovered, as his last memory
was that of her dead.

Hm, I hadn't thought of that - perhaps the whole condition is simply a
reaction to his wife's death (or even just the attack)?  Not sure if I'd
buy into that, but it's a thought nonetheless.
