Cornerstone, Part II

Over the Rhine
Cornerstone
Gallery Stage, just after midnight.

7/7/2001

After Stryper, what was left to see at Cornerstone? Well, Over the Rhine,
of course! After their softer set yesterday, today was time to
turn the amps up to 11 and rock out.

Tonight its the full five-piece band, Here's who's who from left to
right:

Linford - Looks the same as yesterday, same orange glasses. Tonight
he's got his full set up. Synth, Hammond organ, and Wurlitzer
keyboard.

Wade - Wade is behind Linford. He's wearing jeans and looking
kinda mountain-man-ish. He's playing a teal Fender bass.

Karin - Karin's got a nice silver dress and black top.

Dale - Wearing a hat and back behind the bulletproof glass.
Dale's drums are loud. This is a good thing.

Jack - He wears his sunglasses at night.... Um, anyways. He's got
the Gretch Tennessean, Fender Strat, and Slide again tonight.

Notes:
World Can Wait
Karin's vocals started out too quiet, but are turned up halfway
through the song. Jack is playing the Gretch. I wasn't sure this
song would work well live when I first heard it on the CD, but it sure
did.

If Nothing Else
Karin plays the accoustic guitar.

Faithfully Dangerous
Jack switches to the Fender. Rockin' little version.

Linford says hey.

When I Go
Karin plays accoustic and Jack is playing the Gretch.

I Radio Heaven
Jack switches to Fender for this songs and he's really loud. But
that's a good thing. It gives this song both growl and bite.

Little Blue River
This is the only song that Jack used the slide guitar for and he really
stretched out the solo at the end. Linford added his own short
solo, too.

Birds
Karin is still playing the accoustic guitar and Jack is playing the
Gretch. When they did this song in Atlanta, it totally kicked my
butt. Tonight it only partially kicked my butt. I think its because
in Atlanta they just launched right into it, whereas tonight Dale started
off first on drums and then the rest of the song started.

Moth
Big ol' growling organ intro by Linford. The "Films" version of this
song is so much snappier than the original version. The crowd loves
this one.

Some people make some requests and Karin remarks how funny of their
song titles are.

Latter Days
Jack switches back to the Fender.

Someone requests "Il Est Dans Mon Poche" and Karin says she would have
been a bad ambassidor to France due to her grammatical error in the
title of the song.

All I Need
I just noticed that Dale sometimes uses a pair of drumsticks in each
hand, such as on this song.

My Love Is A Fever
Karin says she feels like James Brown with the number of times she
has used the towel on her forehead. She then introduces the crowd
and the band before this song.

Goodbye
Jack changes to the Gretch guitar.

Sleep Baby Jane
As much as I love this song, I've never been satisfied with the live
version. When Karin starts crying "Baby Jane!", the guitar part
behind her never sounds right. To be fair, the album version has like
3 or 4 guitar parts all layered over each other, which makes it
inherently difficult to replicate live. Tonight's version is about as
good as I've heard it.

Give Me Strength
Karin censors the song for the kids at Cornerstone. The "I'm Just
Walking Across Your Heart" outro rocked my world. I was hoping deep
inside that maybe for Cornerstone they'd throw us a bone and play the
whole _If I'm Drowning_, but no such luck. That's okay, this was the
highlight of the show for me.

Rhapsodie
"Stryper wore you out?" Karin asks to a cheering crowd. What a great
way to close things out and wrap up Cornerstone. Kind of like a soft
landing after a long flight.

Not much to add after all these notes... Now I know what Linford
refers to when he talks so often about grabbing hold of life and
wringing it until its dry. Right now, I'm dry as a bone.
