Rolling over the Little Blue River (Taylor Review)

"I think of this one as a lullaby that ran off the
road and into the ditch."

--Linford Detweiler commenting on Sleep Baby Jane

(At the request of my girlfriend, I shall not ommit my
typos tonight...)

What choice have I but to write tonight? After all,
Miss Linton expects it of me. Besides, I would find it
difficult not to write after this evening's
performance...

....

Standing on the ascending stairs which lead into
Rediger Auditorium, I could hear the soundcheck
bleeding through closed doors like morning light
glowing through translucent blinds...

It was no recording; they were playing songs never
performed before, yet freshly familiar. I smiled with
great anticipation...

Ladies and gentlemen, this will be a tour unlike all
others. You will be pleasantly suprised -- especially
if you haven't heard the new album yet.

Here is the setlist as spelled by Linford's hand and
as stolen from Jack's pedalboard. They chose to let
the Good Dogs rest for a change and allowed some older
pets out for a welcome visit.

1. World Can Wait
2. If Nothing Else
3. Fairpoint [Fairpoint Diary]
4. I Radio Heaven
5. Lil Blue River [with a wonderfully long
introduction about it's inception during a drive back
to Cinci from Indiana one late night]
6. Birds [from EVE!!!! They rocked this one up nicely.
I NEVER expected this gem in the setlist!!!]
7. Moths
8. Anything At All [a Karin song yet unrecorded]
9. Give Me Strength [Linford stepped out from behind
his fortress of keys and picked up a guitar... only he
and Karin performed it, although they plan to have it
worked up with the band by next week. It was amusing
to watch them try to start the song. Like a fidgety
lawn mower in early summer, it took a good three tries
before it got under way.]
10. Sleep Baby Jane [more EVE!!!! See quote at top]
11. Faithfully D [still more EVE, and no hint of GDBD
yet. A totally different setlist!]
12. Love Is A M.F. Fever [It's an EVEstraveganza!
Jack's slide palying kicked some wicked ass on this
one!!!]
13. Goodbye
--encore--
Body/Stairway [The Body Is A Stairway of Skin --
Linford and Karin came out, he hit the loop sample
and... wow. Then while Karin is singing, Jack saunters
irreverently across the stage and picks up his lap
steel, and begins to tinker. Dale Baker next comes in
and sits down at his drum kit, begins some funky
scratching on an electronic percussion pad. Mr.
Donahue strides in, bass in hand, and adds with thick
rumbling chords. It was amazing. I wanted a cigarette,
and I don't even smoke.]
14. All I Need, Please Rise... [Only now do they
remind us of the dogs. Good dog.]
15. Latter Days [Yes, they ended with this one, but it
worked this time. honest.]

Linford was very talkative tonight. Much more than
usual, it seemed. Blue shirt, and the big grin which
we have come to expect form Mr. Detweiler. Karin had a
belt with a buckle bigger than Alsaka, black pants and
funky black t-shirt. Jack had the shades going, cuffed
black jeans, and a hip soul patch thing happening. He
looked a bit tired and had a few problems with his
guitar not comming in from time to time, but when he
was on, he was on. Oh, and gum. He had his gum.

Maybe halfway into the concert, Karin looks over
through the front rows and spots me in the aisle.
"Hey, Jack, did you know there's a man with a kilt
sitting right in front of you? Is that you, bink?" And
she went into a short listee dialogue, mentioning how
she frightened Bruce by telling him they've been
reading the list, and complemented me for the "nice
words" I shared about Films For Radio last week. "I
like a man who's brave enough to wear a kilt in
public."

Thanks, Karin. It feels good to be recognized as such
--and by name even!

After the show I swiped the setlist and caught up with
Fred some more... And so wanting to express my
gratitude to the band for my recognition, Fred gave me
the Death Star plans and I and my three compaitriots
weaved downstairs behind the stage and discovered the
secret hidding place of the band.

"Can we come back?" I asked as I poked my head through
the corridor. We filed in and enjoyed some sweet
conversation with Linford and Karin (after she walked
in... "I had to put my underwear on." I swear that's
what she said. Honest!) Jack was pretty well down for
the count. I asked how Hazel and his new son were
doing. He said they were par for the course. Waking up
with a new baby expains at least half of his
tiredness.

I know some of you will freak here, but I found out
Terri is no longer with the band. I did not inquire as
to why. It really is none of my business, although I
would rank it as "differences in musical direction"
and leave it at that. I will miss her voice with
Karin's. They complimented each other's well.

Karin and Linford were very amiable. It was fun
talking to them. Yzzi, Karin loves you and went so far
as to ask me the proper "definition" of WOOTY WOOT!
before she started using it. I assured her that her
assumptions were correct, and that it is an expression
of glee. You know they say hello.

They know we want official Over The Rhine action
figures. With all the acoutraments.

The three of them kindly signed my setlist and some
CDs and posters for my three friends. Karin confided
that she knew another "Bink" a long time ago. "He was
a neat guy... I think he burned out... I wonder if
he's dead now?" Thanks, dearie... :{P}

As we wrapped things up and prepared to head on our
way, Linford offered us sustainace from their dinner
tray. "Would you like some cheeze for your journey?"
How could I refuse?! "Don't touch the salad. That's my
dessert." No problem, Karin. Enjoy your greens.

This was a wonderfully refreshing evening. They're
gearing up for a big tour and tonights show was a
great big burst of fresh air. I'm excited for them
again. The new music is good. Spiced-up hints of the
old are equally welcome. They seem to be a band with a
refocused vision.... One they are finally ready to
share.

Good night, all. This bink is tired.
