Let's ask Linda Ronstadt, or Placido Domingo, or any
of the Motown groups from the 60's. Susan Ashton at
her best was Susan Ashton singing Wayne Kirkpatrick
songs...but she was amazing. 
Singers are singers and songwriters are songwriters,
and sometimes they mix.  Why not give someone credit
for what they do, and not bash them for what they
don't do?
