Re: sacred names (and some OtR content too!)

ok... this is just plain silly. sacred names? c'mon now...

if you don't like monk, hey... that's just fine. although i think you're
missing out on a fantastic musical experience. but don't turn your nose up
at the band because of what they've named themselves.

from his own mouth, ric has said that the name monk comes in no way from the
jazz legend (who he also has stated he respects greatly) but rather from the
'sit and quietly contemplate life' definition of the word monk. just because
the two definitions happen to cross is no reason to hold anything against
the band.

let's use that logic for a moment...

"i can't believe they named the cleveland browns after the godfather of
soul! totally inappropriate... james brown had that name first!"

or even...

"i can't believe that over the rhine named themselves after a region in
germany! that's a deep, integral part of germanic history and should
therefore be untouchable out of respect for the motherland! how rude..."

seems kinda silly, eh? yeah, names get taken. i'm not the first person to be
named to be eric. nor was mr. thelonius the first person with the last name
monk. if ric came out on stage at the start of a show and said 'hi, we're
thelonius monk... thanks for coming out tonight' then you'd have a great
point.

like 'em or don't... makes no nevermind to me. but don't let the name thing
get in your way.

ok. ok... now for the OtR content. after already hearing many of the songs
on the new album (moth, if nothing else, whatever you say, give me strength,
goodbye, the body is a stairway of skin) it seems to me that 'films for
radio' has the potential for being quite a sonic hodgepodge. not that that's
in any way bad... you've got songs (at least when played live) that kind of
rock out, like moth and goodbye, and then songs where you hear little or no
guitar, lots of synth and electronic percussion like give me strenth and the
body is a stairway of skin. at any rate, the diversity i've heard thus far
has made me even more curious as to what the whole album will sound like.
i've been a bit jaded recently towards OtR, but i think i'm actually getting
excited about the new album.

speaking of give me strength... i was able to find it on napster (heh.. good
old napster...) over the weekend. someone had just recorded it off the
television from when it was played on 'third watch' but the quality is still
pretty good. if you're interested, i've posted the mp3 at:

http://eric.schumacher.net/otr/

wow. i'm feeling long winded today. how 'bout that.

good day, all...
eric.
