my impressions

hola a todos! j. marie here and quite gleeful from a
weekend in cincinnati. finally. i have now met
listees and seen over the rhine.

the taft show...

sixpence. ooh, very nice. i enjoyed their new stuff
most especially. i like the addition of keys and
rhythm. last time i saw them was 1996 so maybe these
novelties aren’t all that new :)

ron sexsmith was boyish in appearance but everything
but that in voice and sentiment. i wondered if they
just grew wiser people in canada. beautiful music and
some interesting hip action to boot. i’m now
entreated to listen to his cds and get to know it
better, the music that is.

over the rhine. over the what?! yeah, it was all
that. what i offer here is from years of listening to
otr’s cds and little more so the impressions have
nothing to do with comparing with other shows.
“latter days” was still warming, as were the beginning
standards. but when they brought in “moth” and “if
nothing else,” my foot was definitely a-tappin’. the
funk works for them. “sleep baby jane” was
entrancing. It was neat to finally hear “rhapsodie”
live. i think people get marrried _just_ to hear that
song played at their wedding :)

as bruce said, the symbols were very loud; and spirits
were high. you would’ve spilled your cocoa in there.
the latest (i guess) version of “my love is a fever”
was a nice showcase for jack, but it didn’t leave me
breathless. the encore with “happy xmas” was as karin
said...with 3 of the most timid people she knows. it
was sweet (as in saccharine, not as in a good soccer
maneauver).

tall people. yes, very tall. this aspect of their
presence was certain to me of 5’0”. linford dashed
around between his buffet of claves as i imagine the
phantom might. karin sported some of hazel’s threads
that would’ve warranted comments from my church choir.
but she did look lovely. her mommy sat behind me i
think.

listee beat (it’s kinda like “tiger beat”)...

what a great time! i must agree with dan that the
people were the best part of this weekend. i mean,
yeah, we had the context of amazing music and jaunts
to interesting places, but this list is a special
group. i always thought so from interacting with you
in the writing way, but it’s all confirmed and doubly
so.

i felt like a kid on christmas morning, opening the
packages i secretly hoped for all year long. you
know, i don’t think i’d ever had so many inside jokes
with people whose faces i'd never seen. odd and
charming. after this weekend, there are more to be
sure. i won’t go into personal thank yous and
detailed impressions b/c i’ll just mail those
individuals very soon. i will, however, touch on
events and general impressions for those who sometimes
wonder if the people here really are not shy.

before i mention anyone else: bruce is the bomb. this
man hosted me the entire weekend and carried me all
over the city. he brought me to an international food
market, and i slept by a silvery christmas tree...what
more could one ask for?

to specifically cite gatherings, we started out as
three with bink in tow. little coffee shops and
enchanting views were our friday evening before
welcoming more company on saturday. we had an early
supper at martinos where i met several of you. rick
c., andy, dave, janna, mike, drew (‘n wendy), heather,
alyssa, and (you won’t believe this!) another man in a
kilt (java). i chatted mostly with dave and janna
which was almost too easy. at first drew and bruce
headed the meshed tables, and it was a match made in
heaven. they seem to be brothers, but in the way the
knights who say “nee” are.

after a chilling walk from the concert, we reunited at
uno's where spinoccoli should never _ever_ be served
again. the runny tomatoes make for sour dreams, i
assure you. there, i talked with jay and lynzi
mostly, for it was one of our first “real”
conversations. they make sophistigoth look so easy.
also a highlight was learning about broomed icehockey
from debbie f. we were tempted to pick up a game
since the rink couldn’t have been far.

afterwards, the slumber party began. considering the
rough travel experience the harnishes and don had,
wine was in order. we (i, the said michigan mod
squad, bink, bruce, megan and dan) had a lovely time
winding down and then recording jose feliciano’s
“feliz navidad” for bruce’s answering machine at
around 4 a.m.

brunch was the sunday special before we all ventured
back to our homebases. marquis and his lovely
companion (name is escaping me) joined us. we partook
of extravagant food as we shared in our final
conversations, including one about the largest land
mammal.

and don’t worry, we took many photos. some are
quirky, and i’d say all of them belong in a family
album somewhere.

hasta muy pronto,
j. marie
