REV: bill mallonee and the vigilantes of love

monday, september 25, 2000.
little brother's, columbus, oh.

fred haring put on a good show. this was my fourth time to see him (twice
opening for caedmon's call, once for bebo norman, this time with VoL), but
it was the first time that i'd seen him with a full band. he's got good
songs, but quite frankly, i like him better when it's just him on guitar
and teresa on violin. the addition of drums, bass, and electric guitar
just made it loud. and not necessarily the good kind of loud. it was
still enjoyable, though.

bill mallonee and the vigilantes of love came on at around 10:20pm. i was
only planning on staying until 11:30, because i had a crappy drive back to
dayton to make afterwards. good thing that bill is like a rollercoaster.
they came on and played 3 songs before i could blink- stopping only seconds
inbetween breaths to say "thanks for coming, this song is {fill in blank}."

"this song is off of audible sigh... there was some marketing genius in
that one. some of you probably bought 3 or 4 different copies of that
record."

overall the set was good, but mainly consisted of newer stuff. they played
one tune off of "to the roof of the sky," many tracks off of one of the
many versions of "audible sigh," some tracks off of "room despair," a bob
dylan cover, and some brand new tunes.

"this next song is about spousal abuse... (long pause) ...oh, we're
*against* it."

the brand new tunes that they played right around 11:30 were excellent. i
hope they turn up on the next record (seems about time for another one,
based on their past "crank-em-out" rate). the tunes were "get in, get out"
and "northern soul." good stuff. they were also playing what seemed to be
a new tune as i was on my way out. funny though that before he played the
NEW-NEW tunes, he mentioned the prior songs played as "the old stuff."
weird, because it's all less than 2 years old from a catalog of about 10+
years of material.

overall, a great show. it was worth driving 1+ hour in the bad weather.

btw, anyone coming to the OtR show at canal street (dayton) on friday?
