Re: Re: Over-The-Rhine Digest V3 #190

Hear! Hear!
I too just recently received The Maple Room. (thanks AP) Actually, I'm kind of digging it. Wayne has always been just about the best lyric writer in CCM. Unfortunatley, folks like MWS have gotten hold of him recently and yanked some pretty shallow stuff out of him. This cd reminds me that he is capable of so much more. (See early Susan Aston or Kim Hill.) This new cd has smart lyrics that reek of life as it is in the real world, not as it "is" in your local christian bookstore or coffee bar. I'm also pretty pleased with the music, although I was a bit surprised. I guess I was expecting some straight up acoustic stuff a la Bebo or Wes, but instead found a pretty cool pop sound that is not entirely unlike PFR in its production and Phil Keaggy in its vocals.
At any rate, I highly reccommend this one.

am not a big fan of CCM, but Kirk's cd is filled with intelligent lyrics, and
decent music. I can't say that it is my favorite album (it can in no way
compare with OTR), but for anybody out there who likes contemporary/Top 40
style music, they might want to check this disc out. This is my opinion (and
by no means an insult to Wayne Kirkpatrick)but this disc is not as good as
"Christian music" can get, but it's a pretty good start. I myself am not a
CCM fan, but I was given this CD, and asked to pass along what I thought
about it. If you are going to go buy a Christian CD, this is one that you
should consider. --
