RE: OTR circa eve (Circa Ric, circa Linford on bass)
I may be way out to lunch here, but I have a hard time wishing for the old
sound. It's not that I like "the new sound" better. It's more like a
journey for me (a journey with a really good sound track). Once in love, I
can't imagine not liking a talented artist(s). I'm in for the long haul.
Now there are several bands that I loved that started out with a bang and
failed miserably at getting to the third album (or second for that matter),
but OTR has got what it takes in what ever direction they go. How many
independent bands have this kind of following? And it seems the following
just keeps growing. Anyway, I am busy avoiding putting pre-split and post
split OTR in competition. I JUST LOVE 'EM ALL (enter over-dramatic,
propagandist voice here).

The problem with wishing for that is that the differences weren't so
much personal as they were creative. That's difficult to "talk out."
Linford wanted to take OTR in a certain direction, but Ric didn't want
to follow. Any talking out would have one of them conceding his ideals
(or something like that). I don't think any compromise could be reached
either. When artists (musicians, painters, etc.) want to explore a new
or different style, they typically like to dive right in, not stand on
the edge dipping their feet in (sorry for the pool metaphor in January).
I think if there's any hope of Ric rejoining the band, it would be after
they (OTR) fully explored their current "millieu." Even then, they
would have to decide that they preferred their old sound better. Or
perhaps found a way to blend the two.
BTW, I do miss the rockingness, but I want them to sound how they want
to sound. When a band sticks with a certain sound against their own
beliefs is when they get boring and uncreative. This could certainly
turn back into the "progressive rock" discussion if we wanted it too ;)
