Re: Top 5 Concerts in the last 12 months
Title: Re: Top 5 Concerts in the last 12 months
I’ll jump in on this one as well...
9. Pedro the Lion - September 9, 2001 - Fine Line Music Cafe /Minneapolis
Saw them 2 nights earlier at the Bluebird Theater in Denver.
1. Cornerstone (as a whole)
Now how can you go and do that? I mean, as a whole, sure it’s amazing. But my friends and I always end up picking the best shows, like, each day. I’m going to cheat just a tad for my list – best of the last 13 months...
Radiohead – June something, 2001 – Red Rocks Amphitheater/Morrison, CO
Had to cheat because this was one of the most mindblowing shows, like, ever.
Pedro the Lion – Sept. 7, 2001 – The Bluebird Theater/Denver
Second time I’d seen him/them in a couple of months (Cornerstone)
Dashboard Confessional – March something, 2002 – The Ogden Theater/Denver
Just something about a crowd of hundreds singing along to every word of a song. Especially the sort of songs Chris Carraba writes. It’s sort of like “we’re with you in your isolation and pain!”
The Get Up Kids/The Anniversary – June 21, 2002 – The Ogden Theater/Denver
The Kids are so high-energy and the Anniversary was a lot like if The Jayhawks and, well, The Get Up Kids formed a band together.
Weezer/Dashboard Confessional/Sparta – July 7, 2002 – Red Rocks Amphitheater/Denver
Weezer was OK (not nearly as good, somehow as when I saw them in March, 2001), but Dashboard and Sparta were amazing. If you haven’t heard Sparta, check them out – 3/5 of the late great At the Drive In.
Bebo Norman – Oct. 26, 2001 – Some little theater on the Hill in Boulder
I’d seen Bebo a few times and really like his stuff, but his performance of “Break Me Through” completely changed my perspective on an already pretty cool song. He was in the late part of a cold and his voice was still pretty raw, and the high notes of “You show me that life shines in You” were just that much more intense.
Over the Rhine – Cornerstone 2001 – a field outside Bushnell, IL
Like I said, I’m cheating. Both sets were really great. Actually, I think I liked the acoustic stage set better last year.
Sleeping at Last – Cornerstone 2001
Some say they sound too much like Sunny Day Real Estate, but their CD is really great, and their show was incredible.
The Juliana Theory – Cornerstone 2001
Certainly one of the louder shows I’ve ever been to. Also under the “crowd choir” category.
Waterdeep – Sept. 3, 2001 - some church in Colorado Springs
Honestly, not one of the best times I’ve seen Waterdeep, but a not-so-hot Waterdeep show is still a pretty amazing show. Still in the top 10.
Psalters – Cornerstone 2001
Not really a concert as much as an experience. The crowd is given chimes of one of 3 pitches for a song about unity, and the song only works if each chime is played. One of the coolest worship times I’ve ever had.
Sorry I had to cheat. But it’s been kind of concert-light year until this summer and I had so many cool ones last summer...
np: The Hives – Veni Vidi Vicious (should be the sounds of silence, but I’m up too late. Again.)
