Grand Revelations
I reread "Unsung" this afternoon because there was a gnawing
familiarity about the whole work. I knew there was a deeper reference to
something literary (besides the obvious Biblical references) and today I
had the grandest of grand revelations. Unsung is Linford's version (or
his rebuttal, if you will) of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself."
Whitman was known as "The Great Grey Poet" (THAT reference sound
familiar?!), and was an unabashed humanist. He believed "that we all
possess something of the divine within ourselves and the holiest and most
whole thing we can do for ourselves and our fellow man is develop to our
fullest by listening to all and learning from all, regardless of how
humble the source of knowledge may be."
(http://www.liglobal.com/walt/poetry.shtml) In Song of Myself, Walt
said, "Nothing, not God, is greater to one than one’s self is..." Walt,
in the process of loving life, came to the conclusion that man was the
ultimate purpose and goal of life (perspective: discovering self to be
god), and he felt that was reason to celebrate; whereas Linford's "cup
[ran] over" because he "[had the opportunity] to sip from the cup of the
eternal." (perspective: discovering God to be the purpose & fulfillment
of man) Both men came to the conclusion that life was an amazing
experience that should be savored and lived to its ultimate fullest, yet
their reasons for living life were worlds (or eternities) apart.
Whitman's "Song of Myself" was his celebration of his discovering
life within himself (perspective: "I found me" [antithetical to all
Biblical teaching] ) , while Linford's "Unsung" is his realization of the
divine purpose of man (perspective: "God found me.")
Life is an epic adventure to be written, an unwritten song to be
sung...
I am inspired. ~Karen
