Fwd: I hope someday you'll join us...

Sorry, I'm not thinking real straight today, and I just hit the reply button instead of sending to the list.

I'm right in the middle of apathy and "pathy" on this whole discussion as of
late, but here's my wheat penny's worth of talk.  [Channeling Mary Katherine
Gallagher] My feelings can best be summed up by reciting the immortal lines
of British mop-topper John Lennon in his 70s classic "Imagine"... [/end
Channelling]

:-)  I love that song.  It's a pity that imagination is something that is almost impossible to do as a group.  Everyone keeps imagining what they want to see.

I'm not a big believer in country either, and am just not real territorial I
guess.  So when Holly or someone writes she's not a patriot, it makes a
little sense to me in some sense.  Written hastily I can see how it could
inflame.

Yes, but what is a patriot to one, is a terrorist or oppressor to another.

Overall, here's what I like:

* volunteer military

Right on.

* *unlimited* free speech

"Fire" in a crowded theater, and are you going to let me tell my students at a State University about how important my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is to me or worse yet my faith in the Lord Satan (which I don't hold but just for argument sake).  This is not to say that I don't argee with you, but it is a tough point to defend literally unlimited free speech.

* nondiscrimination

define please.  "Discrimination" as a word does not mean what most people use it to mean.  It is not inherently a negative word.  One must discriminate to choose the best person to run the country (not that we ever do that) or who they should marry or even sometimes who the best person would be for a job.  Any task of comparing options and choosing the best employs "discrimination".

* no personal weapons except for hunting

I agree, but then you'll have people who "need" that 9mm semi-automatic to hunt deer.  Also what do all the people who work for gun manufacturers do for jobs now?

* well run, trust-able small government

Well, while we are at it, I would like Anna Paquin to fall madly in love with me, a Jaguar, and peace on earth.  I know what you mean.  I at least would like a small trustable federal government.  I would mind so much giving local or state governments power as long as I could drive down the street and hassle the representative myself.  Which I happen to be able to now because one of the state senators lives down the street.

* ability to travel freely

How do you ensure this freedom with a small federal government?  I guess I need further definition as to what you mean by "small"

* ability to act upon/free will

I don't think I know what you mean by this.

* fair trial
* fair police, personal safety

Right on, I think that we need to really root out some of the issues here.

* ample infrastructure

* reasonable taxation

How can you have a small government that provides "ample" infastructure without too much money?  This is the equivalent of saying, "I want more social welfare programs, but no one should cuts any other programs or raise taxes."

Still, I must remember that this is a political wish list, and one should feel free to ask for what they really want.

So you add it all up, and I'm happy as heck to be born in America, save an
exception or two.  It'll work for me until there are no nations anymore.

What will there be?

If you're willing to change the world - let love be your energy,

Interesting.

ACLU member Bruce

:-) And the ACLU lets love be their energy?As long as you are not a white, male Christian who wants to express his opinion.

Oh, that isn't fair.  The ACLU has done a lot of good, but I can't help but wonder if they are going the way of unions as being useful but perhaps too big for their pants and too entwined with the system to really be an independent voice.
